10/01/24 Trainer update: I’m able to catch her and take her to an open area and have a productive conversation with her. She still has a big panic response but is getting much better. She will now let people touch her if I have control. I have started to stretch her back legs in hopes of improving her mobility/flexibility and it has seemed to have helped, and she is approachable by professionals.
Baja is a small mare, who foaled 9/1/2021 in the NMLB holding pen and came into rescue with her colt Bravo at her side. At the shelter, she has been kind and quiet, caring well for her pretty colt.
Baja is now halter-broke and has started her groundwork training. She has learned how to yield her fore and hindquarters independently to pressure, how to lunge, and how to tie. She has started becoming more comfortable with being loaded in the trailer and having her hooves handled also. Baja remains skeptical and unconfident by nature and will take some time to become fully accepting of people, but is making progress every week.
Baja has had quite a bit of time off due to an injury that took a long time to rehab. During that time, she did regress in her groundwork training. She is back to being worked with by our trainer and is getting more comfortable with being caught and groundwork.
